The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) announced the draw for the Play-In Round and the First Round of the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Friday. This is the first time since 2006 a Play-In Round, which is scheduled to begin on May 7, has been used.

The Foxes won their first-ever USOC match in 2011 when they defeated the DV8 Defenders (USASA) from San Jose, CA by a score of 5-0 only to fall to the Kitsap Pumas (USL-PDL) in the Second Round. In 2012, Real Colorado suffered another defeat at the hands of KC Athletics (USASA) 3-1 at home.

While the Real Colorado Foxes qualified for the third year in a row to play in the First Round, they won’t know who their opponent is until the results are in for the Play-In match between the Georgia Revolution (NPSL) who is traveling to Highlands Ranch’s Shea Stadium to play the Colorado Rovers (USSSA) at 8 p.m. in both the team and the US Specialty Sports Association’s first-ever USOC entry.

Should the Colorado Rovers win, it would not only be the first time two Colorado-based teams would meet in the Open Cup, but also the Foxes would get to play their first match at their home field in Shea Stadium as the away team (predetermined by a coin toss per tournament rules) on May 14th at 8 p.m. However, if Georgia comes out on top, Real Colorado will be taking a trip to the RYSA Soccerplex in Conyers, GA to play the Revolution at 5 p.m. on their home turf.

Stoner Tadlock, a native of Colorado, has been officially named Head Coach of the Real Colorado Foxes USL Premier Development League Soccer Team for the upcoming 2013 Season.

A graduate of the University of Denver, Tadlock has played 5 professional seasons between the American Professional Soccer League (APSL) and the United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1, now known as the USL-Pro) on such teams as the original Colorado Foxes, Virginia Beach Mariners, Seattle Sounders and New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers. Additionally, he has also won back to back National Amateur Championships with the Denver Kickers.

Tadlock began his coaching career back in 1991, and will continue to serve as a Academy staff coach at Real Colorado along side Real Colorado’s President and Executive Director of Coaching, Lorne Donaldson who boasts “Stoner is a very dedicated passionate coach who will extract the best effort from his players.”

Looking to rebuild the team after sending several prominent players up to the MLS and USL-Pro, Tadlock got his first taste as head coach ahead of the official announcement at the Foxes Tryouts that were held on March 17th at the Heritage Stadium Field.

When asked how his first set of tryouts went, Stoner replied “…tryouts were good. We had some good local talent attend as well as some players that came from out of state.”

Tadlock will get his first test as head coach when the Real Colorado Foxes open their 5th season at home against a non-conference opponent; the BYU Cougars on May 18th at Shea Stadium.

Highlands Ranch, CO – The United Soccer League (USL) officials announced the 2013 season schedule for the 65-team Premier Development League (PDL) on January 18th, where the Real Colorado Foxes compete against PDL Heartland Division teams from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Canada who all will play a 14-game schedule in 2013 (a departure from the 16-game schedule in previous years), seven home and seven away.

The Real Colorado Foxes 5th season will open for the first time at home against a non-conference opponent; the BYU Cougars on May 18th at Shea Stadium. This will be the first of two meetings between both clubs.

Last season, the Foxes not only claimed a second place finish in their division (behind the Thunder Bay Chill who are absent from this season’s schedule), but also their first playoff berth. Though the playoff run was stopped short by the Michigan Buck’s lone goal in the 31st minute, it was just the taste the Foxes needed to not only strive to reach the post season again but also claim Heartland Division Title in 2013.

Additionally based on last year’s regular-season performance (8-4-4) in the Heartland Division, the Real Colorado is guaranteed a spot in the 100th annual U.S. Open Cup. This marks the teams’ third straight year to qualify for the national tournament. The Foxes won their first-ever tournament game in 2011 when they defeated USASA’s DV8 Defenders from San Jose, Calif. 5-0 before being eliminated by fellow PDL side Kitsap Pumas in the next round on the road. The 2012 campaign was cut short with a first round 3-1 loss to the KC Athletics (USASA) at home. This year hosting rights for the first (May 14th) and second (May 21st) rounds are determined by a blind draw in April.

About the USL Premier Development League
While not strictly a “professional” league in the sense that the majority of players do not receive payment, the PDL prides itself on its professionalism in terms of its organization and the way the league is run, and its dedication to developing young soccer players, preparing them for future careers in professional leagues in the United States and elsewhere. As PDL seasons take place during the summer months, the player pool is drawn mainly from elite NCAA college soccer players seeking to continue playing high-level soccer during their summer break, which they can do while still maintaining their college eligibility.

In addition, PDL squads often also include standout high school and junior club players, as well as former professionals seeking to continue competing at a high level, often having been forced to retire from top flight competition due to age or injury. PDL rules dictate that a maximum of eight players on each team’s 26-man roster can be over 23 years old, while at least three players on each team’s roster must be 18 or younger.

Highlands Ranch, CO – Two goals in a 2 minute span starting at the 26th minute (Isaiah Schafer and Alex Tarnoczi) capped off with another for good measure in the 55th minute (Luigi Clendening ) is all that the Foxes needed to send a message back to the Kansas City Brass that despite traveling with only a 14 man roster, Friday’s result was a fluke and after 3 years of sitting just outside of the post season window looking in; the 4th time is a charm.

The result coupled with Des Moines inability to pull past Thunder Bay a second night in a row was good enough to book a spot for Real Colorado’s first appearance to the Central Conference Championships in their four year history.

The Central Conference Championship will be hosted by the PDL Regular Season champion Michigan Bucks at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, Mich. The Bucks, who went 8-0 at home, clinched their third regular season conference title and 10th Great Lakes Division title on Sunday with victory against the River City Rovers, will be joined by Great Lakes runner-up FC London and the Heartland Division champion Thunder Bay Chill and runner-up Real Colorado Foxes.

The Foxes (8-4-4) will face the Bucks (13-1-2) in Saturday’s opening semifinal at 4 p.m. MT, while the defending conference champion Chill (13-2-1) will meet FC London (7-5-4) in an all-Canadian clash.

The Central Conference Championship game will be held on Sunday evening at 4 p.m. MT. After that, the Conference Champions (Central, Eastern, Southern and Western) will meet in the national semifinals on the weekend of July 27-29 at two host locations to be determined. The PDL Championship will be played on Saturday, August 4 at the home of one of the semifinal winners.

Highlands Ranch, CO – Traveling with just 14 due to call-ups and injury, the heavily depleted Foxes roster saw the Kansas City Brass exact revenge on their series sweep last week in Colorado by way of a 5-0 route Friday night in Missouri at the Overland Park Soccer Complex.

Couple that with a Des Moines Menace (7-5-2, 23pts) taking down Thunder Bay Chill (11-2-0, 33pts), who have already secured their spot in the playoffs as the divisional winner, and we have a whole new scenario in the race for the 2nd and final Heartland Division playoff spot.

With last night’s victory, the Kansas City Brass (5-6-1, 16pts) now have new hopes of passing both Real Colorado and Des Moines should they continue to build on their winning streak by taking their final 4 games so long as the Menace do not win both their final matches. The Foxes can still claim the final spot, with a win or tie against KC tonight as long as Des Moines loses one of their final two matches.

Highlands Ranch, CO – The Real Colorado Foxes took down the Kansas City Brass with a pair of 2-1 victories during their final home stand of the 2012 regular season. And as mirror like as are those two score lines, so is the battle for the post season; same final weeks; same 3 teams.

Friday saw the injury riddled Foxes fall behind 1-0 in the first half; and to add insult to injury; midfielder Dan Dwyer, who was kicked hard in the ankle around the 21st minute, exit the match early. The second half, however, was a different story as the Foxes erupted with two goals, starting with midfielder Mike Lind and ending with midfielder Levi Rossi, for a come from behind victory. Rossi, danced around 3 defenders in order to place the game winner in his last match with the club before returning to UNM with team mate Kyle Venter.

Saturday mirrored Fridays match with the home side falling behind in the first half before Lind, in his final match with club after signing a professional contract with a team in Latvia, again found a way to equalize. The Foxes had a few near misses off of a pair of corners before a blocked shot by midfielder Clayton Zelin off a cross from defender Julian Donaldson found its way to forward Cole Chapleski for the game winner.

Zelin, “Julian put in a perfect service near post to me. I headed it on goal, the keeper made a big save and Cole slammed the follow up home upper 90. We scored 4 goals on the weekend [in the] upper 90. We put in a lot of effort to get both results. Both days after we went down 1-0 we had a lot of chances to score that came through hard work.”

Thunder Bay Chill (11-1-0, 33pts) secured their spot in the playoffs as the divisional winner this weekend with a pair of wins win over St. Louis Lions (3-8-2, 11pts).

As for the final playoff berth from the Heartland Division, Real Colorado can claim it without any math if they match their pair of victories against the Brass (3-6-1, 10pts) in Kansas City as they did here. Otherwise, the Foxes can clinch if the Des Moines Menace (6-5-2, 20pts) fails to come away with 6 more points in their final 3 matches, than Real Colorado (7-3-4, 25pts) in their final 2. And because Real Colorado holds the head-to-head tie breaker, if it comes down to that, it would take either pair of Menace Wins coupled with a pair of Foxes losses or the Menace making a 3-0 run and the Foxes splitting their series on the road with KC.

Now, in week 9 the Foxes continue to look to hold on to the final playoff spot with the Des Moines Menace nipping at their heals. But while Real Colorado prepares for their final face off with the Brass in Kansas City, Des Moines has their hands full taking on Thunder Bay, a team that not only leads the Heartland Division, but currently the entire USL Premier Development League, for two of their three final matches.

Highlands Ranch, CO – The Foxes opened up their final home stand of the regular season with four more (much needed) points to take over second place in the Heartland Division; passing both the Springfield Demize and Des Moines Menace.

On Thursday, Real topped Springfield 3-0 in front of a crowd of red for Real Colorado Youth Soccer Night. The Foxes got their first opportunity to take the lead in the 30th minute when the Demize were called for a handball in the box. Forward, Luigi Clendening, stepped up and took the penalty for the home side only to be denied by Springfield’s keeper; Trevor Spangenberg.

Energized by the save, Springfield poured on the offense until Clendening made up for not converting 8 minutes earlier by burying the ball into roof of the net. The Foxes would go into the half time break leading 1-0. From there the match got chippy after forward, Joseph Eubanks, doubled the Foxes lead in the 59th minute. Real capped Springfield’s demise well into stoppage time off a beautiful shot from midfielder Dan Dwyer.

Friday, in front of a new season high for attendance, the Foxes looked to be in control of the match again with nothing much to show until forward Joseph Eubanks cashed in at the 80th minute. But the lead was short-lived, as the Demize’s T.J. Rodriguez leveled the field in less than 60 seconds, forcing Real Colorado to settle for a tie.

Now, in week 8 with only an outside chance of overtaking the Tunderbay Chill (9-1-0, 27pts), the Foxes (5-3-4, 19pts) look to hold on to the final playoff spot with the Springfield Demize (5-4-3, 18pts) and Des Moines Menace (5-5-2, 17pts) following close behind.

UP NEXT: The Foxes’ begin their first of their final four regular season matches; all against the Kansas City Brass on Friday, June 29th and Saturday, June 30th at 7PM. Real Colorado will then finish the season on the road in Kansas City on July 6th and 7th.

Highlands Ranch, CO – The Foxes found themselves in third place despite a coaching change going into their second bi-week and reemerging with 3 points upon their return this past weekend on the road in St. Louis.

On Saturday, tied 1-1 at half, the host St. Louis Lions controlled much of the second thanks to a man advantage after the Foxes Clayton Zelin was shown red for an altercation with the Lions’ Steven Crane in the 48th minute, while Crane walked away with only a yellow. There were five yellow cards and one red in all handed out during the match.

Still showing no signs of wear, Real found the 85th minute to be the pivotal point in the match that they needed after Jean Sandoval was called for a foul in the box, gifting Diego Dos Santos a penalty kick for the Lions. But Foxes’ goalkeeper Miguel Rosales was equal to the task with a diving kick save to keep the game level allowing Real Colorado to immediately go on the attack. Seconds later Levi Rossi sent in a perfect cross to Alex Tornozi, who chipped the St. Louis keeper, Samuel Thomas, for the game-winner.

Sunday proved to be a similar tale of physicality testing both stamina and composure with four more yellow (and one red) cards. Again the Foxes’ found themselves reduced to 10 men after forward Isaiah Schaffer was issued his second caution of the match in the 40th minute.

Real kept the game knotted nil-nil through the break and until the 51st minute. The Foxes’ would continue to keep things close up until the very end, when tired legs finally collapsed, allowing two strikes by the Lions in the 89th and 90th minutes.

Now, in week 7, the Foxes (4-3-3, 15pts) look to regain lost ground on Heartland Division leaders Thunder Bay Chill (7-1-0, 21pts) and Des Moines Menace (5-3-2, 17pts) while keeping the Springfield Demize (4-3-2, 14pts) at bay.

UP NEXT: The Foxes’ of Real Colorado make their final regular season home stand at Shea Stadium against the state of Missouri: starting this weekend against the Springfield Demize on Thursday, June 21st and Friday, June 22nd; concluding the following weekend against the Kansas City Brass on Friday, June 29th and Saturday, June 30th all at 7PM.
